The modern city of Hangzhou is in the background. You may rent a bike or take a pedicab around the lake. It's only several miles. We did a lot of walking and later rented a boat like the one above. If you want to live dangerously, I suggest a pedi cab. We took one, and the driver went down the wrong side of the street with traffic coming toward us. He never flinched when the bus flashed its lights. I'm glad the bus swerved first, because it was obvious that our driver wasn't going to do it.

We visited two mansions open to domestic and foreign tourists for a small fee. One was in the city and the other along the lake. The first mansion was in the city surrounded by a high wall. |

The mansion had intricate carvings under the eaves. |

The second mansion was on the far side of the lake. We took a taxi. While there, we relaxed and enjoyed tea.

This street was a great place to shop for arts and crafts. I bought a wood carving of General Guan Yu. He is also known as Guan Gung. I have several carvings of this historical Chinese general, another important role model for the Chinese due to his reputation for loyalty and honesty. |
